The glass case beside the register
Hello, I’m Hiro Kashihara, the owner of Konohino and a maker of sculptural works.
Have you ever noticed the glass case beside the register at Konohino?
Inside are things that my wife, Nagi, holds dear.
Some were given to her by customers, some are works by artists we have met along the way, and some were gifts from me. Each one carries a small memory that has stayed with her as we’ve run the shop together.
Looking at the collection slowly growing over time, I’m reminded of how far we’ve come. It has only been two and a half years since we opened our doors—a short time, perhaps—but along the way, we’ve had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people and being supported by so many kind hearts.
And sitting quietly above the glass case is another of Nagi’s favorites: a tiny little maneki-neko, secretly welcoming everyone who walks through our doors.
When you visit, I hope you’ll take a moment to look around—not only at the works on display, but at the little things that surround them, too.
Starting Friday, August 21, an exhibition of wearable pieces begins—made and thoughtfully designed by Nagi and all of the staff at the shop.
When I look at each piece, I can’t help but feel that something of the person who made it naturally finds its way into the work.
Their individual sense of beauty.
The things they love.
The shape of what makes each of them themselves.
I wonder what form those feelings have taken.
We hope you’ll come by and take your time looking at them in person.
